Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley
Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay received support from her Aunt Denise as just a young girl. Her aunt was a nurse and did night shifts to ensure that she could devote her days to art literature and theatre. DuVernay enjoyed the movie West Side Story, which she showed her. DuVernay realized after watching her mother's examples of the power of art as an activist vehicle. Her mother was also a social consciousness and taught DuVernay how to convey messages via artwork. While DuVernay grew up in Compton with her parents, she lived at Lowndes County Alabama where her parents lived for many generations. The father of DuVernay's remembered watching the historic Civil Rights march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in adjacent Selma Alabama. Her summers in Alabama's Selma be the inspiration for her later a film about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay obtained her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles upon graduation. There she earned degrees in English and African American Studies. DuVernay started producing for broadcast journalism while she was still in the college. Her career began working as an assistant at CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being asked to examine the garbage at the home that belonged to a member of jury. Following her disappointment with journalism due to the work she was given, DuVernay decided to pursue a career in publicity. DuVernay was employed by a tiny studio as a Junior Publicist shortly after graduating from college. The DuVernay Agency is her first public relations agency. The company launched a number of promotions and lifestyle channels which include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
